How to choose a cybersecurity company in Uganda
A plain-language checklist for individuals, businesses and law firms comparing cybersecurity, digital forensics and online reputation providers.
Why the choice matters
Cybersecurity and forensic work often involves your most private data and sometimes evidence for a legal dispute. A poor choice can cost money, delay recovery or weaken a case. The questions below apply to any provider, including us.
Services in this field include security assessments and penetration testing, digital forensics and investigations, account and phone recovery, online reputation management, and staff security awareness training. Each needs different skills, so ask the provider which of these it actually does itself.
Quick summary
- Get scope and price in writing
- Avoid anyone guaranteeing results
- Insist on written reports
- Confirm confidentiality in writing
Nine things to check before you hire
Clear scope in writing
Ask for a written description of what will be done, what will not be done, and the price, before you pay for the work. Vague promises are a warning sign.
No guaranteed outcomes
Nobody can honestly guarantee that a hacked account will return, a phone will be found, or a post will be deleted. A good provider explains the realistic chances.
Named people you can check
You should know who will actually do the work, what they do, and how to reach them. Be careful with firms that show no people or contact details.
Written reports you can understand
For investigations and security tests you should receive a report in plain language, with evidence and recommended next steps.
Careful handling of evidence
If the matter may go to court, ask how evidence is copied, verified and recorded, and who has handled it.
Written authorisation for security testing
A genuine penetration test happens only on systems you own or are authorised to test, with a signed scope. Never accept a test of someone else's systems.
Confidentiality
Ask whether the firm will sign a confidentiality agreement and how your data is stored and deleted afterwards.
Respect for data protection law
In Uganda, handling personal data is governed by the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019. Ask how the firm handles personal data. This is general information, not legal advice.
Fair pricing explained
Look for a clear explanation of what a starting price covers, and what makes a case cost more.
